Red-shouldered Hawk Portrait - Eco Pond, Flamingo
|
Today I spent the day working around the trailer but was able to spend a couple hours just after sunrise and a couple hours just before sunset at Eco Pond. I had a good morning giving warbler photography a shot and got a few images with which I was pleased. However, this evening a beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk posed on the railing that circles the pond and allowed very close approach by a large number of people. I was able to get some beautiful portraits of the bird in the warm evening light just minutes before sunset. The White Ibis numbers were the highest I have seen thus far and I experimented with flight images as the birds left the pond to roost for the evening.

Interesting Sightings
I found a female Painted Bunting both this morning and this evening while walking around Eco Pond. The highlight of my morning was finding and photographing a female Cape May Warbler in the tree just to the right of the observation platform. Also, the White Ibis numbers were the highest I have seen yet as they gathered to roost for the evening. I found a small box turtle on the side of the path, but he was not very cooperative and kept his head tucked into his shell.
Other Interesting Observations:
I was surprised at the low numbers of people that were at Eco Pond this evening. I had assumed that a Friday night would be fairly busy since people would be arriving for the weekend.
