Swallow-tailed Kite - Eco Pond, Everglades National Park

This morning I spent some time at Eco Pond. It was nice to see the place alive with birds on an absolutley gorgeous morning. A pair of Swallow-tailed Kites flew over my head and circled low for a few minutes before riding thermals high into the sky. I was thrilled to get a few images of each of them as they flew over.
Tomorrow I am joining a crew of researchers from the University of Florida who monitor a number of rookeries throughout the Water Conservation Areas. Tomorrow we are visiting the rookery known as Alley North. This is the largest rookery in the region. Last year it was home to upwards of 20,000 nests with approximately 16,000 White Ibis nests. I am really excited about this opportunity to visit such a huge rookery and look forward to meeting the researchers.

Interesting Sightings

This afternoon I found my first Gray Kingbird of the season. I look forward to seeing these birds throughout the next few months.

Other Interesting Observations:

  None.
